Program Overview

At the Institute for Functional Dentistry (IFD), we believe hygienists are the frontline diagnosticians of modern health. This program transforms how you see the body, the mouth, and your role in preventing chronic disease.

Track 2 is designed specifically for dental hygienists and periodontal-focused clinicians, who want to expand beyond traditional periodontal care and lead the oral-systemic movement with confidence, clinical precision, and purpose.

This program builds a comprehensive foundation in functional medicine as it applies to hygiene, integrating systems biology, root-cause thinking, and whole-body oral health strategies that reshape prevention, periodontal management, and patient engagement.

Continuing Education Hours

The program includes over 120+ CE hours.
Our framework integrates didactic learning, case-based application, clinical integration, and collaborative contemplation.

Upon completion, you will receive a Certificate in Functional Hygiene.
Additionally, your name will appear in the IFD Certified Practitioner directory, positioning you as a leader in integrative, oral-systemic care.

The IFD Difference

Our residency-style curriculum ensures you develop a full-spectrum skill set, integrating functional medicine
and functional dentistry at a depth not found in any hygiene program.

You will learn a systems-based framework rooted in the principles taught by the Institute
for Functional Medicine (IFM), adapted specifically for the hygiene profession.

Integrated Functional Medicine Training

The first half of the program integrates IFM’s Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice (AFMCP) program
with hygiene-focused dental case studies and integration sessions.

This includes 35 hours of IFM CE and 8 hours of IFD Integration.

Specialized IFD Modules

The second half of the program transitions into hygiene-specific content, including
advanced oral microbiome mapping, root-cause periodontal protocols and functional patient coaching.

Advanced Practice Module (APM)

You will complete a key IFM APM that support periodontal and oral-systemic competency:

This APM includes 14.75 hours of IFM CE and 3 hours of IFD Integration.

Detailed Curriculum Breakdown

The Functional Hygiene program provides targeted, high-impact training
that integrates seamlessly with functional medicine frameworks.

You will learn to identify root-cause drivers of oral inflammation, understand whole-body contributors to periodontal disease, and apply upstream prevention in daily clinical care.

Who is this program for?

Licensed dental hygienists, periodontal-focused clinicians, and preventive care professionals. Non-licensed team members in hygiene-adjacent roles may also enroll.

What level of training is this?

Intermediate to advanced training focused on periodontal disease, prevention leadership, and oral–systemic integration.

Do I need to be a licensed hygienist to enroll?

No, but the curriculum assumes familiarity with periodontal concepts and hygiene workflows.

Does this program expand my scope of practice?

No. It strengthens diagnostic reasoning, patient communication, and leadership within scope.

Does this program include functional medicine training?

Yes. Functional medicine principles are taught as they apply to hygiene and periodontal care. This track does not include IFM board certification.

How is the curriculum delivered?

Pre-recorded lectures, live and recorded faculty case studies, Q&A sessions every 1–2 weeks, module-based quizzes, and a final exam.

How long does the program take?

Approximately 1–2 years, depending on pace.

How many CE hours are included?

120+ CE hours.

What certificate will I receive?

Certificate in Functional Hygiene.

Will my name be listed in a directory?

Yes. Graduates are listed in the IFD Certified Practitioner directory.
